Since its debut in 2008, the Essence Black Women in Hollywood event has honored several iconic figures in the industry, including: Oprah Winfrey, Angela Bassett, Alfre Woodard, Ruby Dee, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson and Loretta Devine. One of the premier events which takes place during Oscars week, the 2015 Black Women in Hollywood Award went to Adrienne C. Moore, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox, Lorraine Toussaint, Samira Wiley, Uzo Aduba, and Vicky Jeudy of the Emmy Award-winning series
Orange Is The New Black.” The cast received the Vanguard Award, which was presented by Lupita Nyong’o. Powerhouse actress/director Regina King, whose 30-year career has included work in front of and behind the camera in film and television, received the Fierce & Fearless Award while British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw was awarded the Lincoln Breakthrough of the Year Award which was presented to her by David Oyelowo.
With a performance by Common and John Legend, the Black Women in Hollywood luncheon took place at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and recognized the extraordinary achievements of trailblazing women in film and television.
