Nigerian-American actor, producer, writer and director Karen Obilom was one of the many celebrities who attended the Hollywood premiere of “House Party” in Los Angeles recently.
Obilom, who plays Venus in the remix to the fan-favorite ‘90s classic film, is one of the most hotly tipped new faces in Hollywood. In addition to “House Party,” she plays a lead in BET’s breakout dramatic series “Games People Play” and portrays Roni Evers in the DC Universe’s “Doom Patrol” on HBO Max.
For Obilom, being cast in “House Party” felt like her own “next level” moment: “I don’t really pay much attention to how far I’ve come, but this movie put it into perspective when I came back from Texas to film in L.A. I hit the 101 freeway and I just like cried, ‘cause it was like, ‘Wow, I came here to L.A. to do this and I’m really, really doing it.’ It was a powerful moment for me—I was really proud of myself.”
The multifaceted entertainer has already solidified herself as a force to be reckoned with, having already appeared in hit series and films including HBO’s “Insecure,” Netflix’s “Medal of Honor” and CBS’ “NCIS: New Orleans.”
Obilom can also be seen in the Alicia Keys’ produced Netflix film “Resort to Love,” alongside Christina Milian and Jay Pharoah. The romantic comedy is currently streaming on the platform. Up next, the performer will star alongside Vince Staples, Richard T. Jones and Tamala Jones in the comedy pilot “The Wood,” based on the 1999 feature film of the same name.
“House Party” is rated R by the MPA for pervasive language, drug use, sexual material and some violence and also stars Tosin Cole (“61st Street,” “Till”), Jacob Latimore (“The Chi”), D.C. Young Fly (“Armed,” “For the Love of Money”) and Scott Mescudi (“The Harder They Fall,” “Don’t Look Up”), and is directed by Calmatic, the Grammy-winning music video director in his feature film debut. It releases in theaters Friday 13.
