“It’s the most challenging structure for a film that I have ever been part of,” says Tom Cruise who stars in the futuristic film “Edge of Tomorrow.” In the film, Cruise plays Major William Cage, a military PR man who’s never been to the front line but finds himself trapped in an alien-induced time loop, fighting for his life.

“It’s a full journey for the audience. It has drama and the kind of character comedy that I love. That is really my roots as an actor and what I like exploring,” continues Cruise who has achieved extraordinary success as an actor, producer, and philanthropist in a career spanning over three decades.

When we first meet Cruise’s character Cage, he’s a slick public relations officer in the U.S. army, a post he took up upon the demise of his career in advertising. He’s never had an injury bigger than a paper cut and can’t even stand the sight of blood. When he finds himself about to join the troops on the battlefront of the final push in the war he’s not just unprepared, he is terrified.

“Cage was a really fun character to play,” Cruise shares. “He’s in the military, but he’s not really a military guy; he’s the talking heads’ face of the war and he’s not the least bit heroic. In fact, he’s not even a reluctant hero, he’s a coward who’ll say anything to get out of the fight. And now he has to live through this bloody battle over and over. Every time he wakes up, his worst nightmare begins again.”

Cruise says he relished creating a real anti-hero, the ultimate underdog, a soldier with no possible means of surviving.
“He starts off as a coward and then goes along this journey and then gets this alien power so its progressing the whole time,” he shares. “The cool thing about this movie and what interested me was this whole point of the reset. Being able to reset the day as my character gets this alien power.”
Also starring Emily Blunt, (“The Devil Wears Prada”) who plays a tough Special Forces soldier, “Edge of Tomorrow” is directed by Doug Liman (“The Bourne Identity”). It’s based on the Japanese novel “All You Need is Kill,” by author Hiroshi Sakurazaka. P.
