“We are both salves, but the difference is that he is an in-house slave and I am a field slave,” shares Jones, whose short film “The Box” which she stars alongside Jon Huertas is set to debut at the Dances with Films Festival. “We both have done something bad and we get thrown into this box and we start getting to know each other,” adds the actress who plays the sassy medical examiner Lanie Parish on the popular medical drama “Castle.”
Set in 1840 Virginia, field slave Adeline (Jones) is chastised and confined to a small wooden box where she finds Coffey (Huertas), a mulatto house slave. Seemingly from opposite worlds they find themselves trapped together in a dire situation that forces them to seek a better understanding and find love in a pit of despair. A tragic love story, “The Box” is written by one of the staff writers from the popular TV show ‘Castle’ and is a project Jones is excited about.
“We had so much help from our ‘Castle’ family,” adds the actress whose father hails from Jamaica’s Stony Hill. “From our lighting guys to our camera guys and set designer. We are trying to get it into the film festivals and I think it’s going to do really well. The way it was shot was amazing and we were free to do our own thing. It’s a very dramatic piece and it’s very heartwarming and disheartening at the same time.” Already earning award nominations, “The Box” is up for Best Film (short) in The Madrid International Film Festival and has scored a Best Actor nod for Huertas, Best Director nomination for Huertas and Bikichky, and a Best Producer nom for Rodgers.
In all, “The Box” is nominated in eight categories in the Madrid fest to include Best Short, Best Original Screenplay (short), Best Cinematography and Best Music. Winners will be announced at a ceremony in Madrid July 19.
