Fort Worth – Braving the triple digit heat scourge in the DFW area, the Black Women Lawyers Association of Tarrant County Texas has successfully hosted its annual “Hotter Than July” Scholarship fundraiser. The 2011 edition of “hotter than July” featured the L. Clifford Davis Legal Excellence Award and Ruth E. Roberts Community Service Award Presentations.
Valerie Baston Young, Tarrant County Assistant District Attorney received the L. Clifford Davis Legal Excellence Award. A graduate of the University of Texas with a B.A in history and Juris Doctorate Degree from Texas Southern University school of Law, Attorney Baston has excelled in her Legal Career. She is a member of numerous legally related organizations including the State Bar of Texas, Tarrant Young Lawyers and Tarrant County Bar Association. She is also a member of Civic groups including the NAACP, Legal aid of Northwest Texas and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
The Ruth E. Roberts Community Service Award was presented by Marla Lee, President BWL to Kimberly L. Guy, a native of Texas who graduated with honors from Texas Wesleyan University in 1999 with a B.S. in Political Science, 2002 with a B.S. in Legal studies with paralegal Certification and in 2010, a Master of Science in Legal Studies from Kaplan University. She has served as an event coordinator of the BWL for 10 years, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the American Association of Notaries. Ms Guy is currently a paralegal for the Law Office of Karmen Johnson and Associates.
BWL of Tarrant County was founded in 1986 and has awarded approximately $30,000 in scholarships. It has also served its community through various programs such as Adopt-A-School, National Law Program and its annual “Hotter than July” scholarship fundraiser.
