“Black Panther,” the story of T’Challa, a young African prince who takes on the mantle of King and Super Hero premiered in Los Angeles last night. The film’s stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis were joined by writer/director Ryan Coogler and producer Kevin Feige for a walk down a purple carpet.
They were joined by special guests Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Janelle Monáe, Donald Glover, Issa Rae, Lena Waithe, Jamie Foxx, Usher, Tessa Thompson, Kumail Nanjiani, Yara Shahidi, David Oyelowo, Elizabeth Banks and George Lucas.
The imagery of a regal African King and his Super Hero alter ego has resonated with fans over the years and the event was one of the hottest tickets in town. A highly anticipated film about a Super Hero from a country in the middle of Africa that has been shrouded in secrecy for centuries, the invitations had a simple request for those attending: “Royal attire requested” and several obliged, resulting in traditional African clothing worn by the film’s cast members and many others.
