The banter is light, and the topics are engaging in “The Shop,” a series that brings together artists, athletes and entertainers for unfiltered conversations. Back with another episode of its seventh season, it features lyricist Tobe Nwigwe, who shares his own experience in film, transitioning from football to music and his Nigerian upbringing.
“Nigerians are the best in the universe at over dramatic and negative affirmations,” shares the Grammy nominated rapper who landed his first acting role in the 2023 blockbuster film “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” where he played Reek, a street savvy hustler. “When I told my mom I wanted to do music, she said, ‘You mean you went to school for four and a half years to be [a] rapper?” Nwigwe, who is of Nigerian descent played college football at the University of North Texas but turned to music after an injury.
In the series, the father of 4, who is expecting a 5th child, discusses his strict upbringing, his audition for “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” and the injury he sustained which stopped him from fulfilling his dream of a sports career.
Founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, “The Shop” features the duo talking sports, music, pop culture, world events, business, and other cultural topics with celebrities from the worlds of sports and entertainment. Previous guests have included are Snoop Dogg, New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., running back Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints, Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green, Los Angeles Sparks star Candace Parker, and comedian Jon Stewart.
The latest episode which also features Simu Liu, Calvin Johnson, and Baron Davis and is available on The Shop’s YouTube Channel.
