Teams must proceed through a qualification process in order to be eligible for AFCON.

The bottom-ranked clubs have to advance past a preliminary round that has about 12 teams paired up in six games that will be played over two legs. The six winners proceeded to join 42 other players in the group stage, while the teams with the lowest goals were eliminated.

The 12 groups of four (Groups A–L) made up of the 48 surviving teams then play against each other.

The top two finishers in each group go on to the AFCON, but the bottom two in each group are eliminated. In doing so, the final tournament’s 24 qualifiers are created.
