Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria addressed the diaspora, including Nigerian students as well as visitors at Texas Southern University (TSU) on April 25, 2015. He discussed the economic situation and development in Nigeria as well as addressed the audience on how the current election would affect the state of affairs. He encouraged those in the diaspora to celebrate the great strides made in Africa. He urged the diaspora to be patient with the deficiencies including bad governance, corruption, violence, poor resource management, technological challenges, and structural deficiencies as those would surely change with time so long as we are united for this cause.
Her Royal Highness, Regent Adetutu Adesida Ojei, The Deji of Akure, a TSU alum, (Pharm. D) was also a guest at the lecture which was hosted by Interim Associate Provost and Vice President for Research, Mr. Adebayo Olekan. Chief Obasanjo urged African leaders to join hands in building a better Africa with a sustainable economy and strong leadership. He applauded Texas Southern University for its diversity and the fact that the Vice President of Academic Affairs; Dr. Sunny Ohia and Interim Associate Provost and Vice President for Research; Mr. Adebayo Olekan are of Nigerian roots.
