Lupita, Chiwetel and Ross nominated for Independent Spirit Awards

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o, the stars of the drama “12 Years a Slave” were nominated for Independent Spirit Awards. Ejiofor was nominated for Best Male Lead for his role as Solomon Northup, a free man kidnapped and sold into slavery and is up against Matthew McConaughey who plays a HIV-positive rodeo cowboy in “Dallas Buyers Club” and Michael B. Jordan for the movie “Fruitvale Station.”

Newcomer Nyong’o will battle for the Best Supporting Female Lead against Yolonda Ross, for her impressive part in the John Sayles directed drama “Go for Sisters.” James Gandolfini received a posthumous nomination as supporting male for his performance as a divorced man getting a second chance at love in “Enough Said.” The other nominees in that category are Michael Fassbender for “12 Years a Slave,” a movie which collected seven nominations.

For best international film, the nominees were China’s “A Touch of Sin,” “France’s Blue Is the Warmest Color,” Chile’s “Gloria,” Italy’s “The Great Beauty” and Denmark’s “The Hunt.”
