He plays an action hero in “Borderlands,” the upcoming film based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time. Although he drizzles a little humor in the movie, it’s no comic relief as tackling Roland, a seasoned mercenary on a mission, offered the comedian an opportunity to take on an action role.
“I laugh at myself being in it,” says Hart, who has starred in some of the most successful comedies of the past decade. “Roland is a big guy in the game and it’s an amazing opportunity for me given what people think he should be. It gives me the opportunity to have a complete shock factor for the audience,” adds the 5’5″ actor.
In the Eli Roth directed drama, Cate Blanchett stars as Lilith, a bounty hunter with a mysterious past who forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. The ragtag team include Roland (Hart), a soldier, Jamie Lee Curtis as the oddball scientist and Jack Black as a wiseass robot. With the fate of the universe in their hands, these unlikely heroes form an alliance to battle an alien species and dangerous bandits.
“I went and got some serious training and got really physical and showed up with a certain look and tone. It’s not the size of the dog but the bite,” shares Hart, who trained with weapons and worked with military advisors. “Roland is a guy who has a narrative attached to an agenda of good. He shows a side of humanity, and fans will be happy, and I can say they will have something good to see and I hope they are blown away by the movie.”
Hart, a former shoe-salesman, who began his career in entertainment when he took to the stage at a comedy club’s amateur night in Philadelphia several decades ago, is one of the leading entertainers in the industry.
With a compelling universe and relatable characters, this video game adaptation hits movies theaters August 9
