One was the first Black actor to win the Academy Award. Another earned fame portraying dignified Black women – bringing a sense of depth, nobility, and grace to every character. A third was often called the “godfather of modern Black cinema.” All three trailblazers influenced later generations of actors and filmmakers, including Angela Bassett, Spike Lee, John Singleton, and Ava DuVernay.

Known for challenging racial stereotypes and bringing depth to the Black experience, actors Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson and director Melvin Van Peebles will be inducted into America’s Black Movie Hall of Fame (BMHOF) at its Inaugural Induction Gala, set to take place on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri.

BMHOF was created to preserve and document Black history and culture and honor the pioneers of Black cinema.
