As award season kicks off in Los Angeles, SAG-AFTRA, the American union which represents actors, has selected Jane Fonda as the recipient of their 60th SAG Life Achievement Award.
Previous recipients of this prestigious accolade, which is given for both career and humanitarian accomplishments, include Morgan Freeman.
The actress, whose films include ” 9 to 5″ with Dolly Parton and the comedy “Monster-in-Law” opposite Jennifer Lopez, has never shied away from using her platform to effect change. In 1969, Fonda lent her support to the Indigenous American occupation of Alcatraz Island, a protest aimed at highlighting the U.S. government’s failure to honor treaty rights and advocating for greater Indigenous sovereignty.
A vocal advocate for gender equality, civil rights, and environmental justice, she recently celebrated her 85th birthday by raising $1 million for her nonprofit, the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential (GCAPP) which is a statewide health organization focused on providing school-aged children with resources.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to be this year’s recipient of the SAG Life Achievement Award,” shares Fonda. “I have been working in this industry for almost the entirety of my life and there’s no honor like the one bestowed on you by your peers. SAG-AFTRA works tirelessly to protect the working actor and to ensure that union members are being treated equitably in all areas, and I am proud to be a member as we continue to work to protect generations of performers to come.”
Fonda’s previous honors have included two Oscars, two BAFTA Awards, an Emmy, seven Golden Globes and the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award.
She will be honored with the accolade at the 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which annually celebrates the outstanding motion picture and television performances of the year on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025.
