The 2nd annual “Be A Blessing Day” , an initiative to show love to the homeless on valentines day, held with a creative twist at the ‘Stewpot’ in downtown Dallas. An African dance crew from Berkner High school performed to the delight of the audience just as gift bags were handed out by volunteers in attendance to the homeless led by Dallas top P.R consultant and initiator of “Be A Blessing Day”, Jennifer Onwumere.
According to the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance, there are almost 3,000 homeless men, women and children currently in the Dallas area. Dallas currently maintains a high homeless population rate, which sadly includes a large population of families. Traditionally, when people think of Valentine’s Day the thought of Flowers, Candy, Gifts & Love come to mind. Whether viewed as a commercial or sacred holiday, the premise of this day is Love. ” Be A Blessing Day” (BABD) is an initiative that was created to bring joy and spread love to the homeless on a day that was created to celebrate love- Valentine’s Day.
BABD has partnered with The Stewpot for its 2014 project and packaged a total of over 200 love packs. “Love Bags” are gift bags filled with necessary toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, lotion and other toiletries as well as bibles and candy. 200 + love bags were distributed at The Stewpot. “I feel that this event is tremendously necessary” said event founder, Jennifer Onwumere. “As people, we provide for the homeless on Thanksgiving and Christmas, which is amazing, but we often times forget about them on a day that they need to feel love. What better day than Valentine’s Day to show them that they are loved and that there is hope?”
