She’s a writer/director and the first African-American woman to win the Best Director Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. At a special event, moderated by Urbanworld Executive Producer Gabrielle Glore, Ava DuVernay will share a behind the scenes clip presentation of her latest film “Selma” exclusively at the Urbanworld Film Festival.
“Selma” stars David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tim Roth, Lorraine Touissant, Common, Giovanni Ribisi, Wendell Pierce, Tessa Thompson with Tom Wilkinson and Oprah Winfrey. The film chronicles Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic struggle to secure voting rights for blacks in the ’60s. – a dangerous campaign that culminated with an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. The film will be released by Paramount Pictures on December 25.
“It is such an honor to have Ava join us at this year’s festival to share clips and insights on her latest cinematic accomplishment,” said Glore. “Ava’s relationship with Urbanworld over the last decade has evolved from festival publicist to first time director to award-winning filmmaker. DuVernay received the Best Director Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for her second feature film “Middle of Nowhere” which also starred David Oyelowo. She has built a solid reputation in the world of indie filmmaking, successfully transitioning from film publicist to filmmaker with her own production company, the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM).
This event will take place on Saturday, September 20 at 8:00 p.m. at Manhattan’s AMC Loews 34th Street 14 in New York.
