Hollywood Hands out Best Hairstyle and Make-up Awards

From the director’s awards to the writer’s awards, the movie awards to the music awards there’s even an award for best make-up. Last night at the Paramount Studios Theater in Hollywood Calif., awards for best makeup in television and commercials were dished out. Presenters included Alfre Woodard (“State of Affairs”) and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) president Cheryl Boone Isaacs. Honoring Hollywood make-up artists and hair stylists for outstanding achievements in motion pictures, television, commercials, and live theater, make-up artists from movies “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” took home awards. On the TV side, FX’s “American Horror Story: Freak Show” scored up three awards for special makeup effects, best period makeup and best period hair styling.

Legendary Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker (“American Werewolf In London,” “The Nutty Professor “Men In Black”) and renowned Emmy Award-winning hairstylist Kathryn Blondell received the guild’s Lifetime Achievement Awards while Guillermo del Toro received the Distinguished Artisan Award. Baker has more Oscar nominations than any other makeup artist in history and won Oscars for his work on several movies including, “Ed Wood”  “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” and “The Wolfman.”

“All my life, a makeup artist was all I wanted to be,” Baker said in his speech, after being introduced by his “American Werewolf” helmer John Landis. “And I guess this [award] means I didn’t waste my life doing so.” “Downtown Abbey’s” Magi Vaughan won the best period makeup award and “The Walking Dead’s” Greg Nicotero and Jake Garber won for best special make-up effects.
