African First Ladies Arrive LA for Health Summit

Nigeria‘s First Lady, Hajiya Turai Yar’Adua and other African first ladies  arrived Los Angeles, U.S. to attend the AfricanFirst Ladies Health Summit on improving maternal and child healthcare and tackling HIV/AIDS in Africa.

 The North America correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Yar’Adua is leading the Nigerian delegation. The delegation included the wife of the vice president, Mrs Patience Jonathan, and the Minister of Health, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin and some state governors’ wives.

 The president’s wife, NAN learnt, will hold talks with her counterparts on African health problems, as well as meet with NGOs and other summit participants. The two-day summit, organised by U.S. Doctors for Africa (USDFA) and African Synergy Against AIDs, an NGO formed by 22 African first ladies,will also discuss issues affecting women in Africa.

 About 15 first ladies from Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde,  Central African Republic, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger,Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Swaziland and Zambia are attending the summit.The USDFA said in a statement on Monday, that “empowering Africa’s First Ladies is an innovative approach to bettering the lives of millions of Africans”.

 The statement, signed by its Chairman, Ted Alemayhu, also stated that,“the summit will pair the African first ladies with U.S. experts, key political figures and organisations to foster partnerships”.The wife of the California state governor, Mrs Maria Schwarzenegger is expected to declare the summit open.
