She was the hostess at the Harambee Festival Film Screening of Hurricane in the Rose Garden. Hurricane in the Rose Garden which features stars such as Pascal Atuma, Hakeem Kazim, Tangi Miller and Aloma Wright tells a story about what happens when a happily married couple’s life is suddenly turned upside-down during an unwelcome visit from the husband’s very traditional and very opinionated Nigerian Mom.

Movie Review: “SKIN”

Friday, October 30th, 2009

A powerful and poignant drama based on real events, “Skin” is the true story of a black child born in the 50s to white parents in apartheid South Africa.

Sandra Laing (Sophie Okonedo) is distinctly black — in appearance at least — despite the fact that both her parents, Abraham (Sam Neill) and Sannie (Alice Krige) are white Afrikaners.

okonedo-as-sandra-300x220 Movie Review: SKIN

Store owners in a remote area of Eastern Transvaal, South Africa, Abraham and Sannie are unaware of their own individual black genetics and have lovingly raised Sandra as their white little girl. Things soon drastically change when she is sent to an all white boarding school in the neighboring town of Piet Retief.

Ridiculed and shunned by her classmates, she’s finally examined by State officials after several complaints pour in from other parents and teachers. After being classified as ‘colored,’ she is expelled from the school and the story soon becomes an international scandal as her parents tackle the Supreme Court to have the classification reversed.

The movie follows Sandra’s thirty-year journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation as she struggles to find a footing in a prejudiced world. Desperate to resemble her parents and brother Leon (Hannes Brummer), she even attempts to scrub her skin white by using household cleaners when lightening creams fail.

With scenes carefully structured to tug at heart strings, particularly poignant is the test State officials perform to ascertain Sandra’s race. This involves seeing if a pencil delicately placed in her curly hair would fall out with a slight headshake.

Okonedo (“Hotel Rwanda) puts on a breathtaking performance as an older Sandra whilst the younger Sandra is beautifully played by Ella Ramangwane.

A heartbreaking drama, “Skin” is one of the most moving stories to emerge from apartheid-era South Africa and has already won numerous accolades.

Power Disrupts FIFA U 17 Football game in Kano

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

KANO - Electric Power once again reared its cursed head at the FIFA U 17 world cup series in Nigeria. The game between Spain and USA was disrupted twice as the floodlights shut down due to power failure. The scene reminded one of the official game stops and time outs during an NFL or NBA game.

Spain however earned the fastest red card in tournament history in their come-from-behind 2-1 win over USA while near neighbors Italy ground out a slim win over a stingy Algerian outfit.

The power disruption during a world standard tournament ironically has occurred during the tenure of a President that had promised a power emergency once elected. In a recent development, the local organizing committee received a whooping additional 3.6 Billion Euros from the Federal Government.

QQ (Quick Questions)

Is it possible to dedicate a generator to each flood light with a fraction of the money?

-      Where was President Yar’Adua during the opening ceremony?

-      Did you notice all the empty seats at the opening ceremony?

How was Kreations by Kanan founded?  The name Kanan is my middle name. The business name Kreations by Kanan was suggested by Ms. Nicole Edison. Establishing the Business was headed by Ms. Joeretta Scott; she was the driver of the business idea. Mrs. Eli is the “Mother” of my vision; she supports the business vision from start to finish.  Together, we are building a business that goes far beyond what we are imagining today!

Preparing meals is something that just comes natural for me. I love food and I love to cook. I was raised in Baton Rouge Louisiana , surrounded by women who were great cooks. I was the little girl who always stayed in the kitchen. Over the years I started to perfect every dish I prepared. After perfection, then I started to make each dish my own, with a twist; and that’s why the business slogan includes the word “Twist”.

What are your goals?  Our goal is to be a unique, full-service upscale catering and event production company that specializes in custom event creation. My event team will handle every aspect of any party, including menu design, rental needs, location selection, valet services, lighting, and event design. We strive to maintain a progressive and perfectionist attitude that will set us apart from other companies and is what will give each event a signature style. We will be the best at what we do and we know it…..our goal is to prove it to you.

What are your specialty dishes? I would like to think that all of my dishes are special; but if I would have to choose it would be:
Garlic and Parmesan Dinner Rolls

Lemon Peppered Wings
Baked Lasagna
Chicken Enchiladas
Greens
Macaroni and Cheese
Salmon Stuffed with Crabmeat
